Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty, sometimes referred to as labial reduction, is an elective surgical procedure that is designed to correct and reduce the size of the labia minora and occasionally, the vulva, which make up the external female genitalia. A labiaplasty is typically performed to achieve more visually attractive genitalia, and at the same time it can also provide functional improvements. Some reasons a labiaplasty may be considered include:
- Excessive friction caused from walking, running, and working out
- Enlarged labia minora which can get caught on undergarments and pants
- Previous tearing or stretching of labia minora in childbirth
- Long or hanging labia minora that is visible when standing
- Enlarged labia that cause discomfort during sexual activity
Many patients are qualified candidates for a labiaplasty regardless of age, size, or race. A labiaplasty will in no way affect the vagina; however, for patients seeking to tighten the vagina in addition to reducing the size of the labia, we encourage them to read about our vaginal rejuvenation procedure, which can be done with the labiaplasty. While it is frequently done alone, it is also very common for patients to have a labiaplasty procedure performed together with other surgical procedures. Some patients choose to have an abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast surgery, or other body procedures at the same time. This allows them to maximize recovery and time off work, as well as avoid going under anesthesia again.
Your Consultation for the Labiaplasty Procedure
During the initial consultation, Dr. Behmand will review your medical history. He will also perform an exam to fully evaluate the area to be treated. Your appointment will take place in one of our private exam rooms. You are welcome to bring a guest (spouse, friend, or family member) if you will be more comfortable during the exam. If you decide to come without a guest, Dr. Behmand will have his medical assistant present for the exam portion of your consultation.
Together with Dr. Behmand, you will decide on the best plan of action to address your areas of concern. Your appointment will conclude with a brief meeting with Dr. Behmand’s patient care coordinator to review your surgical quote and scheduling options.
Your Labiaplasty Procedure
Dr. Ramin Behmand will perform your labiaplasty procedure at our private surgery center under general anesthesia to help optimize comfort during surgery. Your procedure will take approximately 1.5 hours, depending on how extensive the correction is. Shortly after your surgery is completed, you will be released home to begin your recovery in the privacy and comfort of your surroundings.
Recovery From a Labiaplasty Procedure
After you are released home following your labiaplasty, you will be given detailed post-operative instructions that are important to follow during your recovery. Dr. Behmand advises that you rest and take about 5–7 days off work. After this time, you will be able to return to most normal, non-exercise activities. You will be asked to avoid all exercise activity for approximately 2 weeks and all sexual activity for about 6 weeks after surgery. The labiaplasty recovery usually involves minimal pain; however, you will be prescribed pain medication to help manage discomfort for the first few days following your procedure.
