Laser Skin Resurfacing
Fine lines, wrinkles, and rough skin is often caused by years of sun damage, age, and environmental exposure (such as pollution and cigarette smoke). Skin that has become rough, blotchy, and wrinkled can typically be refreshed through laser skin resurfacing.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure
During this procedure, a laser is used to help remove damaged layers of skin and reduce fine wrinkles. As new skin cells and collagen develop, a firmer, more youthful appearance can be revealed. Age spots, sun spots, and other uneven areas of pigmentation can also be effectively treated using this method. Laser skin resurfacing frequently complements other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as face and neck lift.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Ramin Behmand, he will determine the best type of laser to treat your skin condition. He will primarily use a CO2 or Erbium laser for resurfacing.
- CO2 Laser: This laser is designed for fairer skin types. It is used primarily to reduce fine and deep wrinkles and for skin tightening. Patients with acne scars and hyperpigmentation are also excellent candidates for CO2 laser.
- Erbium Laser: An Erbium laser will remove the top layers of the skin; however, it does not go quite as deep as the CO2 laser. It typically provides a skin tightening effect and reduces fine wrinkles and mild hyperpigmentation. Most patients will have a shorter recovery time with an Erbium Laser treatment than with CO2.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery
Immediately following your laser resurfacing procedure Dr. Behmand will apply a hydrating and calming ointment to your skin. You must continue to apply this ointment for several days following your procedure, as it will help to minimize skin discomfort. For any additional discomfort, you will be prescribed an oral pain medication.
Your skin will most likely be red and sensitive for at least 2 weeks following surgery, similar to that of a dark sunburn. During this time, it is important for you to stay out of direct sunlight and use a wide brimmed hat if you must go outdoors. Once given approval, Dr. Behmand will advise you to start a healthy skin care regimen including daily sun protection. This is incredibly important in protecting your investment and helping to ensure that you achieve optimal results for many years to come.
