What is Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL surgery ? How long is the recovery?
A Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is a procedure that combines contouring of the lower back by way of liposuction and fat transfer to the buttocks for reshaping. Other areas of the body can be contoured with liposuction at the same time to provide an overall shapelier appearance. The unwanted fat cells from these areas of the body are then grafted in layers across the buttocks to improve the aesthetic appearance and create a fuller shape. When you have BBL surgery with Dr. Behmand, it is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you are able to return home the same day as your procedure to begin your recovery at home.
Recovery begins immediately after surgery by wearing a supportive compression garment to help maintain an ideal shape and avoid excessive swelling. The swelling from the liposuctioned areas generally peak at around one week, but most of this swelling dissipates the following week. Bruising is usually present in the surgical area that will slowly work its way down towards the thighs and ankles.
The new fat cells that have been transferred to the buttocks need time to heal and develop new blood supply after being injected. To best protect and allow this revascularization process to happen, any significant pressure should be avoided during the first several weeks following surgery. Short periods of sitting are acceptable and generally not harmful to the development of the fat cells, but no more than 10-30 minutes at any time is the best protocol. Patients may sleep on their stomach or sides and should avoid sleeping on their back for the first 6 weeks following surgery.
In most cases, patients are able to return to work 7 to 10 days following surgery and will wear the compression garment under loose fitting clothing. But still, no prolonged sitting sessions. After six weeks of recovery, there is enough development of new blood supply to the transferred fat and healing to allow normal sitting patterns without causing harm to the new shape of the buttocks. This is the point where patients are released of their restrictions, may begin exercising regimes and can discontinue wearing the compression garment in most circumstances.
